Stoke's Walters scores twice but Rep of Ireland held by Austria

Jon Walters netted on two occasions but the Republic of Ireland had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Austria in World Cup qualifying tonight.

The Stoke City attacker scored from the penalty spot in the 25th minute to make it 1-1 in Dublin after Martin Harnik's11th minute opener before putting his side ahead 20 minutes later.

On the stroke of half-time, Walters lost his marker to head home a corner from Potters teammate Glenn Whelan.

It appeared as though Giovanni Trapattoni's men were headed for the win that would put them second in Group C but Bayern Munich left-back David Alaba gave Austria a share of the points with an equaliser in injury-time.

Ireland now sit fourth on eight points from five outings, behind Austria and Sweden (who have a game in hand) on goal difference whilst leaders Germany are eight points clear on top after playing six fixtures.
