Stoke's Barnsley loanee Butland handed England U21 armband

Jack Butland has been named captain of the England U21 team for upcoming European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Lithuania.

The Stoke City goalkeeper, on loan at Barnsley, has replaced Liverpool's Andre Wisdom who was handed a four-match ban after receiving a red card in last month's 1-1 draw with Finland.

"Jack Butland will be captain," said Young Lions boss Gareth Southgate. "First and foremost, his professionalism and his standing within the group is very high.

"He is our most experienced player, he has obviously played for the seniors, and, around the squad, I think he is a very good influence.

"He connects well with all of the squad and I think that is important."
