Stoke's Adam gunning for Liverpool ace Gerrard at Wembley

Scotland international Charlie Adam thoroughly enjoyed playing alongside Steven Gerrard at Liverpool.

The Stoke City midfielder, who spent a season at Anfield with England captain Gerrard before his 2012 move to the Britannia Stadium, is well aware just how much influence the Merseyside legend has.

However, Adam is determined to get the better of Gerrard when his Scotland tackle the Three Lions at Wembley on Wednesday night.

"Stevie is as good a player as I have ever seen and, just as important in my eyes, he's also a terrific person as well," he told the Daily Record.

"He's adored by the Liverpool fans and an iconic figure at the club.

"You wouldn't be at Anfield for as long as Stevie has without being a special talent and I regard myself as fortunate for having had the honour and privilege to have been his team-mate for a while.

"He is, without a shadow of a doubt, as good a player as there is in the game."

Adam added: "We should relish the occasion. It is us versus them and every man on our side should want to play against England's world-class players.

"There will be people in England who might think Scottish football is rubbish but this is our chance to go down there and show them our country still produces top-class players."
