Stoke City boss Mark Hughes is chasing Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.
The Daily Star says Hughes is hoping to stage a £3m raid for Defoe.
Tottenham value the England striker at double that but have so far had no takers.
Stoke are confident they could get around Defoe's high wages but are not prepared to pay over the odds for a player who is almost 31.
