Aston Villa are close to signing Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan, according to Sky Sports.

The two clubs have been haggling over a fee for the past few weeks, but it is understood they have now agreed upon the fee of £1.5m.

The 33-year has been with the Potters since joining from Sheffield Wednesday in 2008.

The Republic of Ireland international will leave the club with 291 appearances to his name.
