Stoke City midfielder Stephen Ireland has explained the reasons behind his shirt number.

Ireland didn't just pluck a figure from the air when he chose 32 as his Stoke City squad number.

He explained to The Sentinel: "I'm normally seven, but that was taken, so I went for 32 because that's the number of counties in Ireland (the Republic and Northern Ireland combined, of course).
