Stoke manager Hughes blasts BBC for Shawcross criticism

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has slammed the BBC for their criticism of Ryan Shawcross following the Potters' defeat against Crystal Palace.

Shawcross was roundly criticized by BBC pundit Jermaine Jenas following his poor display during Stoke City's 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace last weekend and now Hughes has gone on to jump to the defence of his captain by slamming the station for their harsh treatment of the defender.

“I was surprised when the guys at the club mentioned he'd had a go at Ryan because it was uncalled for, if that's what they did," said Hughes.

“I think he's one of our more high-profile players. He's skipper of the club, so sometimes people will look at his performances and try to pick holes or faults in them when sometimes they're not really there.

“Unfortunately, things like Match of the Day and these short highlight programmes, all they concentrate on are the goals and incidents in the game without watching all of the game from start to finish, which I suspect none of them actually do because they haven't got the time.

“Clearly, they're going to get skewed by certain incidents which don't then give a fair reflection on what's actually happened over the whole 90 minutes. That's clearly what's happened here."
