Stoke City are keen to start negotiations over a new deal with club captain Ryan Shawcross.

The 29-year-old has only a little over one year left on the six-year deal he signed with the Potters in 2012.

He was recently linked with a move to Newcastle, United but Stoke manager Mark Hughes has dismissed the story as 'pure speculation'.

Hughes said: "We're looking to sit down and re-contract him, along with others.

"That would make sense for everybody. Talk of a move is pure speculation."
