Stoke director Rawlins hoping to push Orlando City into MLS

Stoke City director Phil Rawlins is the majority owner of USL Professional Division club Orlando City and he is keen to get the franchise into Major League Soccer.

The club formerly known as Austin Aztex were moved from Texas to Florida this season in the hope that they can win a MLS license in the not too distant future.

Orlando head coach Adrian Heath, a former Stoke midfielder, has pointed out that this is Rawlins' direction which explains the shift in states in between seasons.

"It was a huge decision for Phil," Heath told the Stoke Sentinel.

"We have a dream of playing in the MLS, but we wouldn't have got that in Austin, not as the area already has two MLS teams in Houston and Dallas.

"There is a chance in Orlando because the league wants a new team from the south east of the country.

"You might think of Miami or Tampa, but they have had a go in the past. I think we have put ourselves in a good position."

Being a former Potters player who has been involved in a few FA Cups, winning one with Everton in 1984, it is a very exciting time for Heath and the rest of the Stoke community with the club taking on Bolton in the semi-final on Sunday.

Heath, now 50, admitted that his allegiances will be thrown the way of his hometown club if they happen to get into the May 14 final at Wembley.

"I have spoken to Phil about the FA Cup final. If Stoke get there, Orlando will have to do without their coach that day," he insisted.
