Stoke defender Shawcross targets England breakthrough

Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross is targeting an England breakthrough.

The Stoke captain was an unused sub for the Three Lions against Egypt earlier this year but was overlooked for last week's friendly with Hungary.

The defender missed much of last season through injury but believes leading Stoke can help push him back into Fabio Capello's plans.

Shawcross, 22, said: "I have to perform every week. Capello has shown he'll pick players on form and obviously the young players will get talked up now.

"If I play well, I'll hopefully get a chance."

Stoke lost their new signing Kenwyne Jones in the 10th minute of a 2-1 defeat at Wolves after a foul by Jody Craddock.

And Shawcross said: "Kenwyne looked good. Losing him so early was disappointing."
