Stoke chief Scholes: Butland England call proof we're no longer ignored

Stoke City chief executive Tony Scholes is delighted seeing Jack Butland turn out for England.

He admits that past players might have missed out because of Stoke's unfashionable perception in the outside world - not least Ryan Shawcross under Roy Hodgson perhaps - but he believes that should be a thing of the past under new England boss Gareth Southgate.

“I felt happiness for Jack because I know how important it is to him," said Scholes to The Sentinel.

"It's also great for the football club to have our players representing England because we haven't had enough over previous years.

“Some players who deserved a chance didn't get a chance and at other times we just didn't quite have that quality.

“I don't know whether it was an image thing, or just people's individual choices.

“Gareth (Southgate) has shown straight away that he's prepared to pick our players and that's good."
