Stoke chairman Coates surprised by Villas-Boas Chelsea appointment

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates admits the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as Chelsea manager surprised him.

Coates says all eyes will be on one of football's most intriguing managerial arrivals in recent years.

"Only time will tell," Coates told The Sentinel. "It's an unusual appointment, and especially unusual for a club the size of Chelsea.

"You would normally expect them to go for an experienced man with a longer track record."
