Stoke City chairman Peter Coates is confident of the quality of new signing Philipp Wollscheid.

Coates said it was unfair to make a snap judgement on the performance of German newcomer Wollscheid during Sunday's 3-0 beating at Arsenal.

"We weren't at our best and they played very well on the day," Coates admitted.

"You've got to give Arsenal credit because they would have given anybody a difficult game on that form."
