Stoke boss Pulis praises ref Wiley after phone call

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis has praised ref Alan Wiley for contacting the club after their 1-1 draw with Manchester City ended in controversy this week.

Ryan Shawcross appeared to have scored a late winner only for Wiley to disallow the defender's effort for a challenge on goalkeeper Shay Given.

Pulis was furious at seeing two points slip away and spoke out after the game at the Britannia Stadium. He was then surprised to get a call from the official yesterday.

He said: "It is the first time a referee has rung up the club and I am pleased he did it.

"It doesn't make it any easier but at least he has had the decency to put his point of view over. He thought Shay was impeded.

"Sometimes it is them and us and it shouldn't be that way. We make mistakes, they make mistakes. If you can sit down and talk about things constructively then it makes it a lot easier.

"I had a good chat with him after he left a message at the club. I have cooled down a little bit but it is still very disappointing. It was two points taken away from us as it happened so late in the game.

"I would not want to be a referee today. Every decision you make, you have cameras around. He has a split second to make a decision. It is so difficult for them.

"Maybe that's why technology should come in when you can ask for video replays, as long as it is quick."
