Dave Kemp could be recalled to Stoke City by manager Tony Pulis.
Kemp vacated the assistant's role 12 months ago to take up a scouting assignment across North and South America from his California base.
But Pulis is keen to bring him back to England to resurrect the role he has previously performed during the manager's two spells in charge at the Britannia.
"It's obviously a situation I've got to look at now Peter (Reid) has gone to Plymouth," Pulis told The Sentinel, "and there will have to be a few phone calls over the next day or two.
"It's clearly an important role at any club and a vitally important role for any manager.
"It's got to be someone you rate and someone you trust implicitly.
"There are a few people who fall into that category for me, including Dave, but we'll have to wait and see what happens."
