Stoke City boss Tony Pulis is ready to make two signings in January.
Newcastle striker Andy Carroll is one target while James Beattie may leave after his dressing-room bust-up with Pulis two weeks ago.
The boss said: "We must not get too comfortable. We might have to fund it by moving on one or two - but last January's arrivals made a massive difference and it would be lovely to bring in two impact players.
"I've had a chat with the chairman. We've got a tough second half of the season. People sometimes become very blase about our position.
"I saw Burnley play Arsenal last week and they were unlucky not to win.
"You look at the run Birmingham are on and see how tight the league is."
