Stoke boss Hughes: We'll push Butland to England number 1

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has stated that his club will push Jack Butland to earn the number one spot for the England national team despite the goalkeeper suffering injury while on international duty.

Butland picked up another injury recently as he broke his finger while on duty for the England national team.

"We're really sorry for Jack as an individual," Hughes admitted. "Reading between the lines there was a real opportunity for him to be playing in one of those games (against Germany and Brazil). That was the message that was filtering through.

"It won't be. God forbid, anything like the length of time he was out for last time. He knows it's only a matter of weeks, he'll be focused and will get on with it.

"He'll be disappointed as he would've played at least one high-profile fixture against one of the best teams in the world. That's what he wants to be part of as it's part of the development programme he has in his mind."
