Stoke boss Hughes: Kompany loves everything about Man City

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has no doubts Vincent Kompany is one of the great Manchester City captains.

Hughes revealed how the Hamburg player bought into the City dream when some chose to ridicule it.

"With Vinny I remember trying to sign him and we had to sell him the club which is what we had to do in those days.

"We used to get laughed at when we were trying to sign Kaka.

"They were saying: 'What the hell do you think you are doing? You have no chance.'

"It's a little bit different when Manchester City are in town these days. People want to talk and listen."

Hughes added: "We had to tell them what would happen in the future. Vinny was very clear, he wanted to come, he wanted to be successful and he wanted to be part of something - same for Pablo.

"That's more credit to Vinny as a character. It was a leap of faith on his part and fair play to him for that.

"He is very strong, has a great mentality and is a real leader of men.

"I don't know why I didn't make him captain, probably one of my many oversights. But he was always a leader in the dressing room."
