Stoke City boss Mark Hughes was happy with teenage fullback Tom Edwards despite their humbling at Manchester City.
The Stafford teenager fought tenaciously against the odds and crossed for Stoke's second to make it 2-1 just after the break before a block tackle left him with a bruised ankle and having to retire prematurely.
"We didn't have too many options," Hughes explained. "He's deserved his chance. If he hadn't got injured in pre-season he would have played before now.
"It's unfortunate for him and it's a learning experience for him and for everybody.
"Among a group that didn't acquit themselves too well today, I thought he did great."
