Stoke City boss Mark Hughes admits Aston Villa could yet sign Glenn Whelan.
Stoke swiftly rejected an initial £500,000 offer from Championship promotion hunters Villa for the 33-year-old, who has been a Potter for almost 10 years.
Villa are primed to return with a serious offer and Hughes, like with Jon Walters, will not stand in Whelan's way – but a second bid has not been forthcoming yet.
Hughes said: "I'm not sure where we're up to with Glenn. Aston Villa made an initial bid which was rejected out of hand. It's a little bit of a similar situation to Jon Walters really in that at this stage of Glenn's career he's probably looking for a little more security. That maybe being offered at Aston Villa.
"I don't think they've been back since with an increased offer, it's gone a little bit quiet I think."
