Stevenage turn to former Colorado Rapids coach as manger

League OneStevenage have confirmed the appointment of Gary Smith as their new boss. The former Colorado Rapids coach Smith arrives following Graham Westley's departure for Preston earlier this month.

Smith coached at Wimbledon, Wycombe and Watford before joining the staff at Arsenal.

In 2008 the Gunners arranged for him to join the Rapids, who are owned by the Premier League club's major shareholder Stan Kroenke.

"I believe it's a fresh, exciting appointment in the Stevenage way," said chairman Phil Wallace. Smith left the club late last year, however, when his contract was not renewed after a falling-out with club officials.

Wallace added: "We want young management who are motivated to succeed.

"Gary is young but he has already won silverware at the highest level possible in the US.

"Now he wants the opportunity to make his mark on the English game."
