Former Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton is in the frame for the job at Darlington.
Staunton, 40, also had a spell as coach alongside Gary McAllister at Leeds last year.
As manager of Ireland, Staunton saw his side lose 5-2 at Cyprus and needed an injury-time goal to beat lowly San Marino 2-1 as his side failed to qualify for Euro 2008.
The ex-Liverpool and Aston Villa defender is currently a scout for Premier League Wolves.
