St Mirren recorded their first win in nine matches and second in 14 when they edged Motherwell 1-0 at Fir Park on Wednesday night.
Michael Higdon's 81st minute goal was the difference as the Buddies moved eight points clear of bottom-placed Hamilton Academical as the 'Well remained fifth.
Higdon entered the fray just a minute or so before he fired a powerful shot after controlling with his chest - the ball getting some help from the uneven turf to get past Motherwell keeper Darren Randolph.
St Mirren boss Danny Lennon said it was a great response by his side after they were only minutes from holding Hibernian to a draw on Sunday.
"I thought overall the commitment and mentality of the boys was maybe the difference," he said.
"There was a desire there, even in the tail bit. Motherwell had good bits of opportunist play themselves and right at the end I saw a different mentality, in the last 15 minutes, when players were flinging their bodies in the way.
"I thought it was well overdue to be honest."
