St Johnstone are chasing Newcastle United midfielder Mehdi Abeid.
Abeid spent the second half of last season on loan at McDiarmid Park.
St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright said: "Contrary to some reports, Mehdi has not been released. We need an answer soon. We would want to have him up to speed for the Europa League."
