Imminent Tottenham signing Jermain Defoe was demanding a LOYALTY bonus from Portsmouth, it has been revealed.
The Sun says Defoe incredibly wanted a £700,000 loyalty bonus from Portsmouth when he quit to join Spurs for £15million.
Defoe believed he was entitled to the payment because he did not officially ask Pompey for a transfer even though he wanted to move back to White Hart Lane.
During the final hours of negotiations, Tottenham said the South Coast club would have to pay Defoe's bonus.
Pompey told Spurs in no uncertain terms where to go and it is believed the Londoners finally agreed to pay it themselves. A source close to the deal said: "You can imagine what Portsmouth's reaction was when they were asked to reward Jermain for his loyalty."
