Spurs push for Premier League to expand bench

Tottenham want the Premier League to allow teams more substitutes on the bench, bringing England's top-flight in line with the rest of Europe.

New manager Juande Ramos and his White Hart Lane boss Damien Comolli have joined the annual debate over increasing the number of subs available to managers in matches.

They say there should be seven instead of the present limit of using three from a nominated five.

Spurs' sporting director Comolli argues it would allow more opportunity for young players to gain first-team experience.

He said: "It is something we totally agree with and Juande Ramos raised it in his first week in charge when he named his squads for the games against Blackpool and Middlesbrough.

"We think it is the right thing to do in the Premier League as all the big leagues in Europe are doing it now."

Comolli told the club's official website: "It is the same in European competition as well.

"We have 18 players involved when we go to Israel (to play Hapoel Tel Aviv in the UEFA Cup on Thursday) but only 16 when we play Wigan on Sunday.

"More substitutes would also offer opportunities to some of the younger players to step into the first-team group on a far more regular basis than they do now. This can only be a good thing."
