Spurs planning British record bid for PSV keeper Gomes

Tottenham are planning a British record £10 million bid for PSV Eindhoven goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

The Mail on Sunday says manager Juande Ramos and director of football Damien Comolli have been scouting keepers ever since the Spaniard dropped Paul Robinson in January after a series of high-profile blunders.

Brazilian Gomes, 27, has emerged as Tottenham's first choice after another potential target, Espanyol's Carlos Kameni, endured a recent collapse in form.

The fee would surpass the British record for a goalkeeper, the £9m Sunderland paid Hearts for Craig Gordon last summer. But Spurs will have to make a firm offer imminently as AC Milan have also expressed an interest in the player.

Kia Joorabchian, the businessman who brought Argentine pair Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez to West Ham, is expected to help broker the deal for Gomes, who has been a key player in the PSV side that should win a fourth successive Dutch league title today.
