Spurs legend Lineker wants lone England role for Man Utd striker Rooney

Tottenham and England legend Gary Lineker says Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney should play on his own up front at the World Cup.

Tottenham and England legend Gary Lineker says Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney should play on his own up front at the World Cup.

Lineker wants Fabio Capello to use him in a similar role to what he enjoys for United, with Steven Gerrard in the space behind him.

Lineker said: "Wayne's been brilliant in that role for United.

"He has played with Emile Heskey and Capello might consider Peter Crouch or Jermain Defoe.

"But the alternative is to play Wayne like he does for United with Gerrard or Joe Cole.

"I fancy using Gerrard with him because that gives him licence to do what he wants and he's brilliant when on song."
