Tottenham and Newcastle United legend Paul Gascoigne is recovering in hospital after being involved in a car accident.

Gascoigne is in a comfortable condition in Newcastle General Hospital following the incident.

The 43-year-old, who won 57 caps for his country, has endured a troubled time after his playing career came to an end.

The former Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers player has battled alcohol addiction and depression in recent years.

He is currently awaiting trial having denied a charge of drink driving after being arrested in North Yorkshire in February.
