Manchester United have accelerated their pursuit of Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.

The centre-back is one of manager Jose Mourinho's top defensive targets this summer and United failed following earlier negotiations to land the Belgium international.

Yahoo! Sport says United have been given encouragement that a compromise can be reached with the defender's advisers making it clear they want to finalise a deal before the transfer window closes on August 9.

It is thought the player won't make an announcement about his future until after the World Cup but with the tournament coming to an end at the weekend and Belgium's last game on Saturday, talks with United are expected to resume in the coming days.
