Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp admits he had no idea he was getting Rafael van der Vaart last month.
Redknapp confessed it the was one of the best presents he has ever received and is licking his lips at the prospect of pairing the transfer of the summer with Luka Modric on a regular basis.
He said: "The chairman rang me up at 4pm and said he had a present for me. I thought he had a new club car for me but it was a player instead.
"He thought it was just going to be a loan but ended up buying him instead. I didn't push at all for him. He was on a list three month ago, I watched him play for Holland and liked him and that was it. It wasn't a case that I needed him badly but he's a good player.
The Spurs boss went on: "I'm looking forward to playing him and Modric together. I love players who can find a pass and make something happen. They will play great together and really enjoy playing together.
"I've got a real problem with competition at the moment because Jermaine Jenas is playing well as well but it's great for me."
