Spurs boss AVB defends Freund after Lyon brawl

Tottenham's victory over Europa League opponents Lyon ended in a brawl last night.

Bale struck two stunning free-kicks to give Tottenham a narrow lead against Lyon - but his late winner sparked ugly clashes between the two benches.

His first, from 35 yards, was cancelled out by Samuel Umtiti's unstoppable effort but the Welshman struck with almost the last kick of the Europa League last-32 first leg.

Spurs assistant head coach Steffen Freund celebrated it ecstatically in front of Lyon's bench, which sparked clashes on the touchline that continued after the final whistle.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas said: "There was lots of emotion after Gareth's late goal and Stefan was showing his passion for Tottenham."
