Sporting Kansas City pushing for development team in Garden City

MLS club Sporting Kansas City are looking to put together a USL Premier Development League (PDL) team in Garden City.

A MLSsoccer.com report indicates that SKC are hoping to grow their brand in the Sunflower State by bringing in a brand new affiliate side more than 350 miles from their headquarters in downtown Kansas City.

Sporting head coach and technical director Peter Vermes confirmed that plans are in place for training facilities and a stadium which would assist the club greatly in finding new talent from southwest area of the state.

"It's one thing if we just went in ourselves and tried to do this, but since the city is behind it, it has so much more impact, and that's the exciting thing about it," Vermes said.

"You bring us, you bring the city and you bring the ethnicity there that is interested in the game like they are, and we can help foster some opportunities there for more kids to be a part of our pipeline."

SKC chief executive Robb Heineman echoed Vermes' sentiments, highlighting that the MLS franchise will be strengthened by the expansion.

"In general, we just want to expand soccer in the region," Heineman said.

"This is a community that's been very active and aggressive in trying to do that with us, so I think it'll be a really cool thing."
