Sporting Kansas City gutted at Orlando City cup loss

Sporting Kansas City head coach Peter Vermes was bitterly disappointed to bow out of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in the fourth round on Wednesday night.

The MLS side were beaten by the USL Pro league Lions 1-0 at Sporting Park courtesy of Long Tan's second-minute goal and Vermes was downcast after watching his side produce 18 shots on goal to five from the victorious visitors.

"Giving that goal away breaks you, because it's not an earned goal," Vermes said. "It's a goal that we're sleeping on.

"You can't give that goal away and then be outplayed in the first half. The second half, we owned the game, but it's too late by that point because you're chasing the game.

"It's definitely not something that we wanted to have happen. We wanted to go deep in this competition, and try to go after it again. It's devastating."
