Sporting CP rejected offers from Manchester United and Arsenal for William Carvalho yesterday.
The Daily Express says United are known to have had scouts in Lisbon over the weekend to watch Carvalho in action against Benfica, while Arsenal saw a £20m bid rejected earlier in the window.
And reports in Portugal suggest that both clubs did make last minute bids to land the 22-year-old yesterday.
Sporting are notoriously tough negotiators in the transfer market and sticklers for fees being paid up front rather than in instalments.
Indeed, it seems that Carvalho had already resigned himself to staying at Sporting even before the late bids.
Over the weekend he said: "I have a deal with Sporting and I am a player of Sporting.
"I am feeling good and it has not entered my head to leave on the last day."
