SPL WRAP: Dundee Utd halts Rangers title charge

Dundee United have given Celtic a little bit of breathing space by beating Rangers 3-2 today. 'Gers missed a great chance to go top of the Scottish Premier League table as they led twice at Ibrox but in the end fell to a tenacious Terrors outfit who netted a late winner through star striker David Goodwillie.

The home side hit the front in the 19th minute when Nikica Jelavic, the hero of the League Cup triumph last week, scored his sixth league goal in his past five outings with a powerful header from an El-Hadji Diouf free-kick.

Dundee managed to level just before half-time when David Robertson slotted home but Rangers again took the lead when Steve Naismith rifled into the back of the net seven minutes into the second half.

Peter Houston's men had been easily beaten by Motherwell in the Scottish Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night and it looked like something similar could happen until Johnny Russell gave the visitors more hope with a 77th-minute header of his own.

Then some late drama ensued in Glasgow when Goodwillie took it upon himself to fire home for his 14th league goal of the campaign in the final minute which kept Rangers two points behind Celtic, whose fixture at Inverness was postponed, with Dundee winning their sixth league game in a row and extending their unbeaten run to eight.

In other SPL games on Saturday, Motherwell beat Aberdeen 2-1 at Fir Park thanks to goals from Chris Humphrey (15th minute) and Shaun Hutchinson (88') before Nikola Vujadinovic scored a late consolation for the Dons who have not win in four league outings as the Steelmen backed up their solid midweek showing with another win.

St Mirren snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Hamilton Academical thanks to a Michael Higdon hat-trick after David Buchanan gave the Accies the lead whilst St Johnstone and Kilmarnock played out a scoreless draw.
