Scottish Premier League chief executive Neil Doncaster has returned from a conference involving all European leagues in Kiev with some good news for Scottish football.
The premise that football in Scotland is dying is far from the truth as the SPL is actually the best-attended league per head of population in Europe as other competitions on the continent and surrounding areas are also having trouble attracting massive numbers to the game in the wake of the global economic crisis.
"All the countries represented there had stories of the economic woes they were experiencing and how these were affecting crowds at their matches," Doncaster said.
"What's been happening here recently with regard to attendances is clearly not a problem restricted to Scotland.
"In fact, a graph was produced to show we have the highest number of people at matches per head of population in Europe.
"In the thick of a global recession our crowds have only dropped off by two per cent."
