Spirit lifted us to victory - England skipper Gerrard

Stand-in England skipper Steven Gerrard said the team spirit lifted the Three Lions to a 3-1 victory over Egypt in an international friendly at Wembley on Wednesday night.

England went into the break a goal down after Egypt's Mohamed Zidan put the visitors ahead in the 23rd minute but fought back to equalise through Peter Crouch before Shaun Wright-Phillips and then Crouch again rounded out the win.

Gerrard, who was wearing the captains armband in the absence of the injured Rio Ferdinand, praised the spirit of his teammates against a very determined Egyptian outfit.

"You've got to give credit to them, they played very well in the first half. We never converted chances we had. So I think we were unfortunate to come in 1-0 down," Gerrard said.

"But we showed good character and togetherness to get back in it and go on to win it.

"We were a bit individual in the first half. But we pressed lot more in the second."
