"You just need to see the calibre of club that tried to sign him to understand that. He was sought out by the biggest sides on the world stage."
However, Spalletti does confess he wasn't entirely disappointed at the idea of Chivu walking out on Roma.
"I don't know why the transfer failed. It's a shame, as it was a win-win situation. If Chivu wanted to change scenery, had the chance to earn a lot more money and the two clubs had reached an agreement, I don't see why things didn't go the way they were supposed to.
"I think there is still the chance that negotiations for a player like Chivu can still be picked up again.
"Having said that, what I really hope will resume are talks for a contract extension here at Roma."
