Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate wants to ban his players from drinking this season.

"I just don't think the two mix very well together," said Southgate. "Twenty or so years ago you could drink and play but, now, it's not possible.

"When I first started out as a player, drink was very prevalent in the game, but it's not now and won't be at my club.

"The players know what is expected of them and if they don't come up to those standards then they will be told.

"I want a club where people like coming into work every day and it is almost impossible to be the last person in and out because the players almost live at the training ground.

"But it is a place of work. Anything that gets in the way has to be moved aside."
