Southgate to oversee England for trio of World Cup qualifiers

England U21 coach Gareth Southgate has been handed the reins of the England senior squad on an interim basis following the resignation of Sam Allardyce.

Allardyce was sacked/walked away from his job after a sting operation caught him discussing with reporters disguised as businessmen how to get around the FA's rules on third-party ownership of players.

Southgate will take charge of the Three Lions squad for at least four games including three World Cup qualifiers.

"Gareth Southgate will take charge of the men's senior team for the next four matches against Malta, Slovenia, Scotland and Spain whilst The FA begins its search for the new England manager," a Football Association statement read.

England meet Malta in World Cup qualifying at Wembley on October 8 and take on Slovenia away three days later before hosting Scotland on November 11 on the road to Russia prior to the friendly with Spain four days after.
