Southgate reveals Chelsea captain Cahill retirement plans

Chelsea captain Gary Cahill has ruled out international retirement.

Cahill was a late call-up for the World Cup squad and, at 32, he was the oldest member of the England squad.

He made just one appearance all tournament, in the final group game when the Three Lions and Belgium were both already through and made a raft of changes, but wants to carry on playing for his country.

And boss Gareth Southgate insisted he is still in his long-term plans, confirming: “Gary has a desire to still be involved.

“He's a player we really respect. His contribution to what we've done, in terms of how he's been with the group, his training and everything else, has been excellent.

“We just have to see how he starts the season. He also knows that generally speaking we are looking at some other players. He doesn't want to finish and I don't want him to finish either.

“So we've had a really productive and mature conversation about what happens next. And hopefully he has another brilliant season with his club."
