Southgate plays down Morrison, Berahino World Cup chances

England U21 boss Gareth Southgate has played down talk of one of his squad making a big impact at next year's World Cup.

West Ham United midfielder Ravel Morrison and West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino have caught his attention of England boss Roy Hodgson.

Southgate said: "Realistically - and if I am looking at what is right for the players - I am not sure I would take any of them because I think there is such a long way for them to go and so much more for them to learn.

"Now who knows what progress they may make in the coming months? There are some very experienced players ahead of them in possession of the shirt. Of course we want to progress them as quick as possible. I was the same as a player - everything comes a bit later than you want it.

"If anyone gets in the squad then brilliant, I will be delighted for them. But the reality of it is they have a lot of learning to do. The more they do that out of the spotlight the better."
