Gareth Southgate has dismissed claims from Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate that Middlesbrough lack ambition.

Southgate said: "Sometimes ambition is seen as purely financial investment.

"In the summer, because we didn't spend some of the sums other clubs had spent it was a distraction for some of our players. But there's no guarantee spending money will achieve success."
