Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is delighted with the form of Chris Riggott this season.
He told the Sunday Sun: "I played with Chris (Riggott) so I know what he's capable of. He's said himself he's suffered a bit in the last couple of years, and had his share of injuries.
"But he's playing very well at the moment. Last season he needed to go out on loan, he needed a change of environment and first-team football.
"He came back from Stoke with an excellent attitude, was very good in pre-season. He missed the start with another injury. But the one thing I've learned from the last year or 18 months in the job is that you have to reward people when they do well.
"He's certainly done extremely well for us since he's come back in and he's deserved to stay in there."
