Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate believes Stewart Downing is committed to their relegation battle.

Southgate said: "The situation could quite possibly have been different.

"Tottenham are a fantastic club. I have had plenty of conversations with them but Stewart is not for sale.

"Having money at this time of the year isn't suitable. You lose players and don't have time to get replacements.

"The players understand the situation and have got on with it. Stewart has a similar mentality to Gareth Barry. Even with the difficulties of the situation, he is strong enough to deal with it."
