Southgate backs Liverpool's Rodgers regarding young British talent

England U21 manager Gareth Southgate concurs with Liverpool's Brendan Rodgers that there are plenty of talented British players in the system at the moment.

The Reds could see six players end up in Roy Hodgson's England squad for this summer's World Cup and Southgate has praised the Anfield boss for advocating the push to develop Englishmen.

Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson are the experienced British duo in the Liverpool side that regularly play for England but the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and maybe even Jon Flanagan could be the next generation which sits well with Young Lions mentor Southgate.

"Brendan has talked many times about his belief that young British players can play and I totally agree with him," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"I know within our Under-21s there are lads that can use the ball, there's no question about that.

"So for many, it's just a case of being given the opportunity and having a manager and a coach that has belief in them.

"They won't get it right immediately - but there are lads there that are playing at the top of their game, that are being encouraged to express themselves."
