Afonso Alves has changed Middlesbrough's mindset, insists manager Gareth Southgate.
Southgate said: "We lost two strikers last summer, but we actually lost six, because four here were injured. Tom Craddock is a smashing lad, but we had him on his own upfront at Manchester City earlier in the season. Then he went on loan to Hartlepool the other week and he wasn't in their team.
"We've been short in that area of the pitch. The others are starting to score now, but we're getting more of that firepower back.
"We want to be scoring four or fives, but from October and November I could tell we weren't going to be free scoring. We had to make sure we didn't give too much away at the other end of the field which is what we had to do to get results.
"Now we might just be more of a threat in terms of firepower. Afonso Alves is the first person to score two for us in a game and if players know we've got somebody who can do that it alters their mindset."
