England coach Gareth Southgate is delighted seeing Wayne Rooney now with Everton.
Two weeks ago former Manchester United captain Rooney rejoined his first club on a free transfer and the promise of more regular football has opened the door to the striker adding to his 119 caps and 53 England goals.
“The great thing for Rooney is that he will probably be playing more regular football and so it's as simple as that," Southgate told the London Evening Standard.
Southgate considers all options when choosing his squad as he showed when he called up 34-year-old Jermain Defoe. The Bournemouth striker had not played for England since 2013 but injuries to Rooney and Tottenham's Harry Kane earned him a recall in March and he remained in the squad last month.
“In the League we only have 70 English players, and so we certainly aren't ruling anybody out," said Southgate.
