Southampton's Ward-Prowse eager to follow footsteps of Gerrard, Lampard and Beckham

Southampton midfielder and U21 England captain James Ward-Prowse has expressed his desire to follow his heroes Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and David Beckham by one day captaining the England senior team.

When asked if he see himself skippering the senior squad one day, the ambitious 20-year-old said: "I hope so.

"I feel like I would be able to do it. All of my role models - Gerrard, Lampard and Beckham - were leaders and that's the sort of person I like to think I am, an inspiration to others.

"People at Southampton have been showing me the way and I am still learning all the time about being a leader.

"Jose Fonte is a fantastic captain and I've been learning from him. Hopefully he can show me the way and lead me down the right path."

Ward-Prowse skippered Gareth Southgate's Young Lions in the come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Germany at the Riverside Stadium on Monday and also scored the winning goal for his side.

He added: "It was lovely to captain the team. It's something I've always wanted to do. I captained the side for the second half in San Marino last season, but this time I was captain from the start. It's a great honour and something I can see myself doing in the future so it was good to do it."
